Job description

IBM Research Europe seeks one Research Software Engineer with skills in python development and data science to join the UK team for a one-year Future of Climate Residency.

You will join IBM's global initiative to build resilience to climate change by developing AI-enhanced and cloud-enabled climate impact models to quantify climate risk. Responsibilities will include developing key components of our modelling ecosystem, working with large climate datasets in our geospatial data repository, IBM PAIRS Geoscope, and collaborating with colleagues across IBM's global research labs. This is also an exciting opportunity to contribute to real-world solutions which build climate change resilience for IBM's clients.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

·  Undergraduate degree in Computer Science or postgraduate degree in a closely related field (e.g. Maths, Physics, Engineering).
·  At least two years of software development experience in Python in a scientific computing environment.
·  Significant experience working in Linux/Unix operating systems, including shell scripting in Bash.
·  Proven experience in collaborative software projects and/or developing tools for other to use, including use of git (for example collaborating with others in an open source project or developing tools for a research team).
·  Data science and machine learning experience including cleaning data, training and evaluating machine learning models using Jupyter notebooks and standard Python libraries (pandas, numpy, sci-kit learn), ideally with geospatial data.
·  Ability to collaborate with a global team. You are a clear communicator and quick to get to the point, deliver work on time and are proactive in generating novel ideas to achieve the team's milestones.

Preferred Technical and Professional Experience

·  Experience building and deploying Docker containers.
·  Experience using containerised platforms such as Kubernetes or OpenShift.
·  Experience working with climate data and models, including climate impacts (e.g. flood, drought, wild fire, disease), and standard climate data formats (netcdf, grib)
·  Experience working with nosql databases
·  Experience creating (or at least using) REST-APIs
·  Experience with agile development. You can work with a team, be a proactive member of Scrum meetings and deliver promptly.
