Job description
IBM Research Europe seeks one Research Scientist with a strong background in numerical modelling and experience in machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques to join the UK team for a one-year Future of Climate Residency
You will join IBM's global initiative to build resilience to climate change by developing AI-enhanced and cloud-enabled climate impact models to quantify climate risk. You will contribute to the development and testing of hybrid physics-AI models for key climate impacts (e.g. flood, drought, wildfire). You will collaborate with colleagues across IBM's global research labs, and contribute to original research, and aim to publish at top conferences and journals (Nature, Science, PNAS). This is also an exciting opportunity to contribute to real-world solutions which build climate change resilience for IBM's clients.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise
· Undergraduate or postgraduate degree in Physics, Mathematics, Meteorology/Climate science or closely related field.
· Research experience running numerical physics-based models in a Linux environment.
· A record of relevant novel research.
· Expertise in python for data analysis (pandas, numpy, Jupyter notebooks), ideally with geospatial data.
· Experience in machine learning using standard python tools (e.g. sci-kit learn) and a keen interest to learn more.
· Good knowledge of statistics for model evaluation (e.g. skill scores), and the use of probabilistic/ensemble forecasts.
· Ability to collaborate with a global team. You are a clear communicator and quick to get to the point, deliver work on time and are proactive in generating novel ideas to achieve the team's milestones.

· Experience configuring and running weather/climate models, storm surge models or hydrological models.
· Research experience or training in climate science.
· Experience with deep learning techniques.
· Experience with agile development. You can work with a team, be a proactive member of Scrum meetings and deliver promptly.
