IBM Research Australia: Software Engineer Internship Melbourne

Fulltime 12 Months starting January or February
Fulltime 6 Months starting June or July

At the core of IBM's innovation are its 12 global research labs. IBM Research - Australia is a vibrant and relatively young community within IBM Research. The lab is primarily an industry solutions lab that focuses on conceiving, designing and building next generation systems that will transform healthcare and life sciences, resource management, emergency management and financial services.
As a Software Engineering intern you will be joining a team of researchers and software engineers to conceive, build, test and deploy solutions for some of the world's challenging computing problems. You would be involved in projects such as medical image processing, real-time social media analytics, weather impact forecasting and Blockchain.
Required qualifications:
- Second year or later into a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, IT or related field
- Strong competence in one or more of the following programming languages: Java, C/C++, Python, Scala, and/, Swift and/or Javascript
- Good understanding in Algorithms and Data Structures
- Knowledge of Software design patterns
- Experience using one or more relational or NoSQL databases
- Strong academic performance, with a minimum of a distinction grade point average

Preferred qualifications:
- Knowledge of Blockchain, AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning and/or Natural Language Processing techniques
- Experience using Big Data technologies such as Apache Spark and/or Hadoop
- Knowledge of Distributed Systems
- Experience building web front-end applications
- Experience using Unix/Linux systems
- Familiarity with Agile processes and DevOps culture
- Contributions to open source projects (demonstrated through a GitHub profile)

- You will need to be an Australian/New Zealand Citizen or Permanent resident
- You will be enrolled in a relevant degree at a University in Australia
- You will have no more than 2 years full-time relevant work experience
