Title of internship:
Carbide formation in high strength steels for a better toughness.
Subject of the internship:
The traineeship is in the frame of new high strength steels of very high tensile strength > 1200 MPa. These steels show some mechanical weaknesses in certain conditions. The target is an improvement of properties by adding relevant quantities of elements in the chemical composition in order to modify the microstructure by bringing carbides and/or oxydes. The work will be shared within two specialized teams in 1/ physico-chemistry (elaboration of materials) and 2/ fracture mechanics (evaluation of the material toughness). First a good bibliographic study on the impact of carbides and/or oxides on mechanical properties (toughness) will be done. Secondly, with chemical elements which have been chosen, steels will be elaborated in our laboratory. The combination of several carbide formers will be tested. With eventually the addition of oxides. Thirdly, the trainee will characterize the materials. The carbides populations will be analyzed by scanning electron microscopy, and TEM. Other technics of characterization could be developed during the traineeship. Fourthly, mechanical tests linked with physic chemical treatments will be carried out in order to evaluate an eventual improvement of the material behaviour. Finally, the trainee will have to conclude on the efficiency of the oxide/carbide formation regarding toughness resistance. The metallurgical understanding of the reasons of this improvement has to be investigated. The trainee will work between ; - the Process laboratory / Physico-chemistry service, in which competences in metallurgy, thermodynamic and solidification are at a high level. - the Automotive laboratory (for the automotive market) / In-use properties (forming, crash, toughness ) Cluster with high competences in fracture mechanics There will be also some strong links with another laboratory which manages the special casting apparatus.
