Minimum Criteria

· Registered Nurse with Occupational Health Diploma / Certificate

Formal Qualifications Preferred (in addition to the above)

· Registered Midwife
· Community health certificate
· Pharmacology
· Employee assistance programme (EAP) training
· Safety certificates
· Audiometry
· SHE and HACCP training
· Experience
· Minimum 2-3 years Occupational Health experience in a manufacturing environment

Other Requirements

· Driver’s License Occupational Health Training

Primary Purpose of the Role

· To provide comprehensive health services (SHE) for the protection and promotion of total physical, mental and social wellbeing of all employees.

Major Responsibilities

1. Primary Health Care

· Promotes, supervises, performs prompt and effective medical assistance to employees in acute and chronic situations
· Responds to emergencies
· Diagnoses and treats customers
· Ensures adequate job restriction and protection
· Liases with external service providers
· Prevents time away from work (‘Lost Time’)
· Provides cost effective and accessible service to employees
· Wellness Campaigns on site

2. Occupational Health Care

Pre-placement Medical

· Conduct pre-placement medical to prevent any liability to the company and to prevent illness/injury to employees and colleagues

Periodic Medicals

· Plan and conduct programme for biological monitoring, exit medicals, retirement medicals and ill health retirement medicals
· Monitor potentially harmful chemical usage
· Evaluate, document and report potential hazards
· Make recommendation on health matters to management
· Communicate potential health and safety hazards in the workplace.

Injuries on Duty

· Draw up policy and procedure for IOD
· Administer First Aid and secondary treatment
· Advise management on preventative and/or corrective action by investigating causes, frequency of injuries
· Prevent Lost Time for employee and the company by treating IOD promptly
· Promote heeling and prevent complications by early treatment
· Rehabilitation

3. Education

· Educate employees on health related topics, including chronic illnesses and primary healthcare in either formal/informal groups or on a one-on-one basis
· Plan and schedule tasks such as First Aid and HIV/Aids training in conjunction with the Training Department
· Policy making (new programmes)
· Advise Line managers/departments (e.g. SHE) on safety equipment
· Presentation to management on general matters affecting the safety and health of employees at work, in the workplace

4. Administration

· Plan, develop and administer the policies and procedures of the Company Health Centre
· Manage health service provision
· Monthly reports, as stipulated by Health Services Co-Ordinator
· Represents Health Services at meetings
· Communicates appropriate information to immediate supervisors, managers and HR department (e.g. Fit to work documentation)
· Maintain employee records
· Purchase and replenish medical supplies
· Ensure legislative compliance
· Communicates within department and to internal/external stakeholders (e.g. responding to e-mail)

5. Research

· Maintenance of accurate and up to date medical records and or reports to track employee health /illness and provide the company with the required data, keeping in mind the employee’s right to confidentiality
· Investigate illness/injury episodes and trends to determine health and safety needs. Communicates this information to relevant stakeholders for the development of safety programmes
· Monthly statistical reports for management
· Evaluate findings of periodic medicals
· Assessment of ‘Employee Risk Factor report’
· Investigate employee complaints regarding safety or healthy at work
· Representation to management or safety committee in matters relating to work

Medical Surveillance Programmes:

· Schedule, conduct and record checks on employees with chronic illness

6. Rehabilitation

· Evaluate performance/progress, counsel and coach if necessary
· Monitor progress and co-ordinate community health services for rehabilitation purposes

· Employees (both permanent and part-time) at all levels of the organisation, including but not limited to Managers; Team Leaders (Supervisors); Contractors (Brokers/Private).

External Contacts

· Other Medical facilities and colleagues
