In the System Engineering department, we're always looking for new technologies for our future radar systems. An apparently easy problem as segmentation of radar images is not as trivial as it sounds. Therefore, besides deterministic processing, we like to explore the possibility of using a neural network.

The assignment

Image segmentation with neural networks in Python

Our dataset contains hundreds of ‘scans' (time separated images).
An image (one scan) contains mainly ‘sea' and ‘land' areas.
Use parts of the image as training set (e.g. 10x10 pixel-area in sea-area and 10x10 pixel-area in land-area) and after training the neural network, classify the whole image.
The main priority is understanding the working and usefulness of a neural network for radar image segmentation.

The assignment contains (but not limited to):
· Follow the course: https://www.coursera.org/learn/machine-learning (exercises in Matlab)
· Make a shadow version of the Matlab exercises in Python3.
· Analyze existing video data and classify regions in the video as ‘land', ‘sea' or ‘noise'.
· How to feed the neural network with the correct information should also be researched.

Expected outcome:

Python program described above.A report of how a neural network can be used for segmentation of a radar picture.
