Description de l'offre

WHO ARE WE?

Join Thales , global leader in safety and security technologies for Aerospace, Ground Transportation, Defence and Security sectors. With 62,000 employees, in 56 countries, the Group enjoys an international implantation which allows it to act as close as possible to its customers, everywhere in the world.

Thales Alenia Space , a joint venture between Thales (67%) and Leonardo (33%), is a key European player in space telecommunications, navigation, Earth observation, exploration and orbital infrastructures.

Because of its unrivaled expertise in dual (civil/military) missions, constellations, flexible payloads, altimetry, meteorology and high-resolution optical and radar instruments, Thales Alenia Space is the natural partner to countries that want to expand their space program.

The company posted consolidated revenues of 2.1 billion euros in 2015, and has 7,500 employees in eight countries.

WHAT COULD WE ACCOMPLISH TOGETHER?

The “Telecom System” R&D team of the Business Line Telecom of Thales Alenia Space is preparing the next systems of satellite communication. Its research studies focus on radio transmission, numerical communications, satellite resource sharing and network protocols and architectures.

The understanding and evaluation of the Web users' QoE is critical to design a satellite offer (for a satellite operator, but also for a satellite manufacturer).

However, the accurate evaluation of the different Web applications' performance is really complex, and notably because of the dynamicity and instability of the Internet (in terms of network topology, users number, congestion, and so on…), but also because of the numerous and various interactions between the different networks protocols and hardware.

Thus, in most cases, simulation and mathematical analysis are not sufficient to accurately evaluate the user QoE.

This internship aims to provide a solution for the accurate evaluation of satellite customers' QoE, thanks to the realization of an experimental platform of Web performance measurements.

The intern will be in charge of:

1- Proposition of test's scenarios for the QoE evaluation, using:

State of the art of the different Web traffic models (such as the one of the 3GPP). Actualization of these models, taking into account the strong and fast evolution of the Web usage.

Definition and selection of relevant metrics for the QoE evaluation of different types of Web application. For instance, an appropriate metric for the evaluation of the “websurfing” could be the measure of the download time (Page Load Time).

2- Deployment of those scenarios on an experimental (and large scale) platform:

Understanding and deployment of an existing Internet metrology tool that enables the realization and reproduction of real tests on distant physical machines.

Contribution to the development of this tool thanks to Python scripts in order to implement the “QoE evaluation” scenarios that you have previously defined.

3- Evaluation and comparisons of QoE for each types of satellites networks.
