Position Title: Designer, Hardware Tools
Location: Toronto

Job Purpose:
To design new or revise existing products, equipment, and installations, utilizing processes based on established engineering principles, and by applying latest technological advancements and practices in hardware engineering to meet project requirements.
Responsible for designs of varying difficulty and complexity depending on experience, and involving new technology and innovative approaches.

Main responsibilities include:

1. MANAGEMENT
• Plans all assigned HW design tasks in an independent way, providing completion estimates and identifying potential design risks.
• Keeps track of progress on all assigned technical tasks, and regularly provides concise up to date status.
• Intimate understanding of Chorus 2.0 requirements. Contributes to their improvements.
• Elaborates and presents effective solutions to problems or inefficiencies in the department's operation.
• Review the relevant HW metrics to understand the level of performances of the HW design activity and participates to the HW Engineering Improvement plan

2. TECHNICAL
• Demonstrates a high degree of initiative, resourcefulness and breadth of knowledge beyond the primary discipline in solving problems.
• Stays current with the technology of the discipline and aware of technologies of other disciplines.
• Demonstrates a superior level of logical reasoning resulting in effective designs for products and processes, understanding not only the product itself but also the main functions at system level
• Interprets, identifies, and documents the HW requirements such that customer needs are met within the budget and schedule constraints.
• Ensures both the safety and quality of hardware products while reducing the deployment cost of those products. Contributes to the heightened reuse of product hardware and contributes to improvements in hardware quality.
• Prepares specifications for hardware components or devices.
• Understands and reviews the HW architectures.
• Locates and researches source information for design activities, extracting the pertinent data, and using it to provide recommendations.
• Makes timely decisions, both independently and in concert with others, after a thorough evaluation of all relevant factors.
• Uses all relevant HW development tools.

3. COMMUNICATION
• Articulates technical design issues and their resolutions in a clear and concise way so that it can be reviewed and approved by the HW Engineering Managers
• Deals confidently, courteously, and correctly with both internal and external people at any level.
• Promotes a harmonious working relationship among group members.
• Participates to the mentoring of more junior members of the HW department.
• Maintains a high degree of professionalism in the job and in relations with others.

Ideally you should have:

· Post-secondary Technologist diploma or Electrical or Mechanical Engineering degree
· Railway signalling experience will be an advantage
· Embedded Systems Architecture and Design, Mechanical Design for Transportation Industry, Design for Manufacturing of rugged equipment to be deployed in harsh conditions.
· Schematic capture and circuit analysis, FPGA design, Micro-Controller design, Modelling in MATLAB or Equivalent, Scripting Languages, Electrical Wiring Diagrams (OrCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, AutoCAD 2D/3D)
· Mechanical design in AutoCAD, SolidWorks
· Engineering Process and Design Methodologies
· Good interpersonal and technical writing skills.
