Data Centre Mechanical Engineer (Shift based role)

Our technology teams in the UK work closely with HSBC's global businesses to help design and build digital services that allow our millions of customers around the world, to bank quickly, simply and securely. We also run and manage our IT infrastructure, data centres and core banking systems that power the world's leading international bank.

Our multi-disciplined teams include: DevOps engineers, IT architects, front and back end developers, infrastructure specialists, cyber experts, as well as project and programme managers.

Following extensive investment across our Technology and Digital domains and with plans for continued expansion throughout 2020 and beyond, we are currently seeking a Data Centre Mechanical Engineers to join HSBC Technology.

The Engineering Day Team is responsible for the complex engineering infrastructure and associated building services supporting the EMEA Group Data Centres which are essential for maintaining the integrity of IT Services.

The role is accountable to the Engineering Shift Manager and part of a multi skilled engineering team. The Team is responsible for ensuring all critical engineering services are available, maintained and constantly upgraded as technology advances, ensuring all works are performed to current standards and in alignment with applicable regulations and statutory requirements in a professional and proficient manner.

In order to avoid IT Service impact, and mitigate operational risk, a very high level of integrity and diversity of support is required at all times. Maintaining essential environmental conditions often requires fast and accurate assessment of problems, in which decisions need to be taken without reference to line management.


In this role you will be responsible for:
· Operation and maintenance of complex engineering systems, ensuring that work is completed to the applicable standards, within agreed timescales and with no disruption to IT Services.
· Implementing effective emergency operating procedures to ensure system recovery is achieved with minimum impact to services, escalating and raising awareness as appropriate.
· Scheduling and managing the planned, preventative and reactive maintenance of engineering systems and infrastructure, whilst ensuring work is completed within agreed timescales and to the expected quality.
· Other dimensions of the role include the scheduling and execution of all required infrastructure installations required to support IT Hardware & Equipment.
· Improving service quality, by continuously reviewing and enhancing methods of operation and maintenance, effectively utilising tools and systems employed within the Group Data Centres.
· Ensure current Health & Safety legislation and statutory requirements are met by implementing and developing safe working practices and procedures, this includes the continuous development, implementation and review of engineering standards and procedures within the department.
· Resolving operational issues, making concise, accurate, informed and timely decisions and where required without reference, thereby, ensuring the integrity of infrastructure is maintained in support of IT Services.

Qualifications :

To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:

·  Be in a commutable distance to data centre location (Barnsley)
·  Experience of working in a multi-disciplinary team
·  Highly motivated and willing to take on new challenges
·  Commitment & flexibility to changing demands
·  Excellent written and verbal communication skills
·  Excellent technical and analytical skills
·  Ability to resolve critical situations without reference
·  Competent IT skills essential
·  NVQ III/BTEC HNC or equivalent qualification in Mechanical (biased)/Electrical Engineering
·  Experience in maintaining complex systems including HVAC, Chillers, Water supply and boiler/plant rooms and UPS systems (static and rotary)
·  Health and Safety awareness and be trained to a recognised industry standard

The base location for this role is Barnsley and operates on a 6 on/6 off rota i.e. consisting of 3 x 12 hour days, 3 x 12 hour nights followed by six days off with an 18 day break every five rotations.
