Our technology teams in the UK work closely with HSBC's global businesses to help design and build digital services that allow our millions of customers around the world, to bank quickly, simply and securely. We also run and manage our IT infrastructure, data centres and core banking systems that power the world's leading international bank.

Our multi-disciplined teams include: DevOps engineers, IT architects, front and back end developers, infrastructure specialists, cyber experts, as well as project and programme managers.

We work in small, agile DevOps teams with colleagues around the world from our offices at the Bluefin Building in Southwark, our global headquarters in Canary Wharf, and multiple other locations around the UK including Sheffield, Leeds, Barnsley and Birmingham.

Following extensive investment across our Technology and Digital domains and with plans for continued expansion throughout 2020 and beyond, we are currently seeking a number of experienced mechanical engineers to join HSBC Technology.

Overview
· The Shift Engineer role is based within the Wakefield Global Data Centre. One of the most critical facilities within HSBC's property portfolio and containing critical data processing areas, office areas and complex engineering systems.
· The role is accountable to the Engineering Shift Manager and is part of a team of multi skilled Engineers. The Shift Engineers role is to carry out all the necessary installation, maintenance and operation associated with the entire mechanical and electrical infrastructure which is essential to the continuous operation of the Global Data Centre.
· In order to avoid IT Service impact, and mitigate operational risk, a very high level of integrity and diversity of support is required at all times. Maintaining essential environmental conditions often requires fast and accurate assessment of problems, in which decisions need to be taken without reference and/or instruction.
· In order to maintain the integrity of IT Services, work within and/or supporting critical Data Processing environments is often performed outside of core business hours to reduce the risk of business impact. It is therefore crucial that work within these areas is completed in a professional and proficient manner with quality of delivery a 'Key' driver.

What you will be doing;

Operation and maintenance of complex engineering systems, ensuring that work is completed to the applicable standards, within agreed timescales and with no disruption to IT Services.

· Implement effective emergency operating procedures to ensure system recovery is achieved with minimum impact to services, escalating and raising awareness as appropriate.
· Scheduling and managing the planned, preventative and reactive maintenance of engineering systems and infrastructure, whilst ensuring work is completed within agreed timescales and to the expected quality.
· Other dimensions of the role include the scheduling and execution of all required infrastructure installations required to support IT Hardware & Equipment.
· Improving service quality, by continuously reviewing and enhancing methods of operation and maintenance, effectively utilising tools and systems employed within the Group Data Centres.
· The jobholder is responsible for the reliability and continuous operation of all engineering and building services.
· Ensure current Health & Safety legislation and statutory requirements are met by implementing and developing safe working practices and procedures.
· This includes the continuous development, implementation and review of engineering standards and procedures within the department.
· Resolving operational issues, making concise, accurate, informed and timely decisions and where required without reference, thereby, ensuring the integrity of infrastructure is maintained in support of IT Services.

Qualifications :

What you will bring to the role;

·  Be in a commutable distance to data centre location (Normanton - Wakefield)
·  Multi-skilled Engineer (Mechanically Biased)
·  Experience in maintaining complex systems including HVAC, Chillers, Water supply and UPS systems (static and rotary)
·  Health and Safety awareness and be trained to a recognised industry standard
·  Commitment & flexibility to changing demands
·  Ability to resolve critical situations without reference
·  Competent IT skills essential, conversant with MS Office – Excel, Access, Word etc.
·  Acquired a range of technical, analytical skills and experience within an engineering environment.
·  Experience of supporting others' performance, enabling them to achieve by providing clear direction, motivation and support.
·  Experience of making prompt and practical business decision, even in times of ambiguity, considering various perspectives and taking responsibility for outcome.
·  NVQ III/BTEC HNC or equivalent qualification in Mechanical (biased)/Electrical Engineering would be beneficial but not a pre requisite

The base location for this role is Normanton - Wakefield and operates on a 6 on/6 off rota i.e. consisting of 3 x 12 hour days, 3 x 12 hour nights followed by six days off with an 18 day break every five rotations.

In addition to the details listed above, the ideal candidate will have a track record of:

·  Experience of working with complex systems ideally in a Data Centre or other Mission Critical environments.
·  Experience of Air conditioning, chilled water systems, Generators, DRUPS and UPS
