Job Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented Control Software – Power System Engineer to join GE Power Conversion’s Control and Automation Systems Engineering group and contribute to the development of our next generation products.

As the Control Software Engineer you will be responsible for functionality development and validation integration of control functions to meet migration of centralised power management system control to a distributed control structure.

In this technical role, you will work within a multi-disciplinary team of engineers to specify, design, code and validate control algorithms used for Marine, Naval, Energy (µGrid) and Industry applications.

In this role you will focus on:

  • Designing and implementing control functionalities for power system control, suitable for conventional power generation systems and distributed energy resources (DER’s), as part of a distributed control architecture, using model-based design principles.
  • Verify power system control functionality/performance through simulation environments such as Simulink and in Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) test setups.
  • Applying code generation principles to fast-track developed control functions for direct deployment to a real-time control system.
  • Using model-based design, developing and maintaining an equivalent digital twin of distributed control functions.
  • Working closely with Product Management/Leadership to translate requirements from initial design into detailed design, through levels of testing and validation and maintenance.
  • Providing technical advice and assistance to the sales, commissioning, and service teams.

We are looking for a committed and professional individual with:

  • Strong knowledge and understanding of electrical power systems, including conventional synchronous generators, and distributed electrical resources (DER’s), including their control.
  • A relevant degree in Electrical, Electronics or Industrial Control Systems Engineering (or equivalent), and/or significant relevant experience gained in a professional engineering environment.
  • Knowledge about Electrical components (Transformers, PV, Wind, Drives etc).
  • Proficient with software simulation and design tools, such as MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Experience of C-code programming or automatic code generation and awareness of embedded software design, microprocessor & FPGA programming.
  • Commitment to your work with a pragmatic approach; a good sense of quality and a can-do mentality.
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and to establish good team working relations.
  • Unrestricted Right to Work in the United Kingdom.

What will make you stand out:

  • Understanding of complex technical systems, ability to organise them in a structured way.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good experiences in working with cross-functional projects.
  • Good coordinating skills and following-up.
  • A growth mindset and motivation to learn.

You can expect from us:

  • Challenging and exciting projects.

  • Attractive compensation.
  • Flexible benefits so you can build a package that fits your personal needs. Some core benefits are: Employer pension contribution (not subject to individual contribution), Income protection, Private Health Insurance and Life Assurance.
  • 26 days vacation + bank holidays.
