Objective:

BASF has an opening for a Physicist, Material Scientist or Chemist as Associate Scientist/Scientist in our Advanced Materials research division to join the R&D team in Shanghai covering the region Asia-Pacific. This position is focusing on material physics of polymers. One area of focus are polyurethane based materials and systems. In close cooperation with professional research & development teams you will drive the related physics and material characterization. Overall objective is the contribution to the continuous improvement of our products in a broad range of application areas. This position is open to all nationalities. Main Tasks:

Your expertise and methodology will make significant contribution to the under-standing of the interdependencies of chemical structures, morphology and properties of compact and cellular materials. Depending on the needs of R&D and production you will adapt or develop your own methods by cooperating with external research facilities and universities. You find a set of both thermomechanical characterization methods (e.g. DMTA, rheology, DSC, mechanical tests) as well as light and electron microscopes. You actively connect with other departments of material physics & analytics in Ludwigshafen (BASF headquarter) and in Lemfoerde, Germany (R&D center for polyurethanes), where further characterization methods are accessible to drive problem solving. You will work in interdisciplinary teams on projects with R&D and business units. You come up with new project proposals and ideas. You will take lead on your research activities. Requirements:

You hold a PhD in preferably Polymer Physics or Physics, Materials Science or Chemistry with outstanding results. You have profound expertise in polymer physics and polymer chemistry. Ideally you have already experience with polyurethanes. You enjoy learning about and understanding complex phenomena in the context of practical applications. You bring along a high level of creativity and self-initiative. You consider latest IT-techniques as opportunities to drive the future. Ideally, you have already experience with managing employees and leadership. Good communication skills and advanced English language.
