Study of the formation of banded structures in high strength steels

Subject of the internship:

High strength steels are chemically characterized by important concentrations of Mn, Si and C. During the solidification of the steel in continuous casting, the alloying elements are segregated in such a way that highly heterogeneities of microstructures are obtained. After subsequent hot rolling and coiling of the slabs the heterogeneous microstructures may result in banded structures of for instance ferrite/pearlite. The formation of banded structures may cause a deterioration of the mechanical properties of the steel

The aim of the study is to analyze the effect of the processing parameters of continuous casting (superheat, casting speed) and hot rolling (coiling temperature, cooling rate after hot rolling) on the formation of banded structures in HSS and to propose solutions to limit the development of this structure in hot sheet. The trainee will carry out a literature study on the field of HSS steels microstructure. Afterwards, the student will contribute to the development of metallographic and image analysis tools for the characterization of steels containing banding structures. He/She will work with in collaboration with specialist on steel forming and on microprobe analysis to better correlate the microsctructure with the forming properties of steel.

The student will use tools models to simulate the effect of the processing parameters (continuous casting, hot rolling, coiling) on the formation of banded structures.

The outcome of the traineeship will be recommendations on the casting process parameters to optimize the slab structure based on the experimental results and simulations.
