Title of internship:

Modeling of side trimming process

Subject of the internship:

The side trimming process is widely employed for flat steel product manufacturing in the plants of ArcelorMittal. The side trimming of steel coils ensures high quality coil edges and a desired strip width. However, the process might suffer from some failures, which lead to both rejected products and extra tools’ maintenance cost. The optimization of side trimming process could help to avoid such failures. Therefore, there is thus real need to develop numerical models that enable acquiring further understanding on detailed mechanical aspects of the process and in the same time performing parametric study for process optimization. Results of such simulations could be imported to the simulations of cold rolling process to see the impact of side trimming on the occurrence of defects, especially the saw-tooth one, during cold rolling. The main objective of this internship is to develop a finite element model for the side trimming process. The mission : The internship will focus on the development of Finite Element models for side trimming process aiming at both understanding local stress filed encountered by the tools and damage-fracture sequences occurring inside the cut steel strip. Detailed works are: 1. Literature review on existing models: Finite Element & semi-analytical ones. 2. Construction of a FE model of side trimming process accounting for deformation of tool (i.e., knives). 3. Improvement of the model by accounting for a damage model (or fracture criterion) to describe initiation and propagation of cracks inside the strip. 4. Comparisons between model results with experimental measurements. 5. Construction of a 3-D model by accounting for both tool deformation and final fracture of trimmed material. 6. Chaining: side-trimming cold rolling simulation to see the impact of the side-trimming on the occurrence of defects (e.g. saw-tooth) in cold rolling.
