Electro-assisted pickling and post-treatment of alloyed grades
Subject of the internship:
During hot rolling of alloyed steels Al and Si segregate to the steel surface and form Al and Si oxides between classical scale (wüstite) and steel. Next during cooling down of coils, grain boundary (GB) oxidations are developed. The pickling ability is a major roadblock because Al-Si oxides and GB oxides are not dissolved in standard pickling conditions (HCl acid bath at 80°C). Their removal takes place through dissolution of steel, but this is ten times slower than for scale in a bath without inhibitor. The internship objective will concern the process improvement for the alloyed grades by activation of electrochemical reactions (dissolution/deposition) during pickling operation. The internship student will contribute to the dimensioning of the electrolytic process in term of its efficiency and cost.
- Literature synthesis electrochemical pickling and deposition, as well as on electrode materials
- Experimental work on:
- Validation of experimental protocol to simulate electrochemical pickling in the lab
- Contribution to the sizing of new electro-pickling cell
- Study of the main electrochemical parameters on pickling efficiency:
- Surface characterization after pickling at different conditions: optical interferometry (surface roughness), surface brightness, FTIR and Raman spectrometry (identification of alloying elements oxides), SEM (identification of residual oxides)
- Study of the opportunity of surface metallization at the end of pickling
- Interpretation of results and conclusions on electrochemical pickling efficiency, process sizing & its cost, and surface metallization interest.
