Subject of the internship:

The combustion of pulverized coal injection (PCI) can be used as fuel or as additive in steelmaking vessels. For example, in ironmaking blast furnaces, pulverized coal has become a very important supplementary fuel by generating heat and reductant in the raceway and replacing expensive metallurgical coke, lowering the operating cost and decreasing the emission of carbon dioxide.

When co-injecting PCI with fuel gases and handling fuel gases flexibility, the numerical simulation methodology to handle such complex situation should be improved and this is under investigation at ArcelorMittal R&D in order to have predictive tools to help in improving processes in industrial installations. These tools can be used in technical assistances to plants that are looking at reducing their energy consumption or in research projects aiming at testing new firing techniques before implementation at industrial scale.

The training work will support these research activities. The student will develop a proper methodology to simulate firstly PCI combustion process in a lab-scale furnace to validate the model before extending it to large scale industrial furnace.

Applicant Profile:

Fluid mechanics/heat transfer/combustion/chemical engineering background Preliminary competencies in discrete phase, turbulence modeling, turbulent reacting flow and CFD Knowledge of the Fluent package, grid generator like Meshing or Gambit is a plus.
