Title of internship:

Assessment of stress concentration and generation during cooling/heating in a slab due to initial defect using numerical simulation

Subject of the internship:

There is always the risk of slab breakage after continuous casting in the following production steps. The problem may occur during the transportation, manipulation, cooling or heating in the reheating furnace of Hot Strip Mill. There are some sensitive grades that are more prone to these kinds of breakage. The origin of the problem is not well known yet, however experts believe it is due to the existence of initial defects in the slabs combined with the external aggravating conditions. The possible initial defects are macro and micro segregations, precipitations, porosities, inclusions, internal cracks, etc. These initial defects could be related to the steel chemistry or casting parameters. In this internship the focus is mostly made on the mechanical aspects rather than metallurgical aspects of cracking; meaning to evaluate the internal stress which promotes the crack propagation during cooling/ heating processes having some defects. There are two tasks to be accomplished during this internship; to develop a Finite Element model evaluating the internal stress in the slab during cooling/ heating considering the initial defects. As well as studding/developing an analytical model. The following tasks are expected to be realized: 1. Literature review on fracture and existing fracture models, 2. Development of a FE model to estimate the internal stress around the crack zone and evaluating the possibility of crack propagation, 3. Validating the numerical results through fracture tests, 4. To study about direction of cracks that are more sensitive, 5. Developing an analytical model based on the obtained results.
