Amadeus enables travel agents across the world to sell flights to hundreds of millions of passengers. In a very competitive industry, we help airlines and travel agencies differentiate their offer, attract more passengers and increase revenue by merchandising – through different fare packages called “Fare Families” and extra services such as checked bags and seat selection. Ancillary services have grown by 90 % in one year due to the explosive online traction. A key growth factor to maximize adoption and success lies in our ability to report to customers on current performance, analyse data to explain past performance, make predictions to help our customers tweak their offers across different segments and markets.

The internship will take place within the Content Processing team, which manages Merchandising, Pricing and Ticket Changer products. We are experts in the distribution business and in the product functionality. We collaborate with data scientists from the Travel Intelligence team, to benefit from their expertise and their development of big data analytics connected to visualization software.

The data analytics project involves extracting flight, fare and services information from a big data cluster. The data model is evolved to include and new parameters needed from the Passenger Name Record (PNR), and sometimes generates calculated parameters (ex ratio of seat selections to flights). The extraction process reads the PNR data into the data model and creates files uploaded to another database to enable loading it into visualization software.

One aspect of the internship involves configuring the visualization software to generate performance reports across many airlines and travel agencies, including attractive visuals for non-technical readers. These reports will be shared with other Amadeus departments and customers.

Another dimension of the internship will involve mining the big data to look for trends and interesting insights, generating graphs and presenting them to the product managers. This data exploration requires collaboration with product managers to ask the right questions, and could be augmented by using statistical techniques to produce insights.

This project is done using Agile Scrum methodology. The intern should be familiar with this project management technique and act sometimes as Product Owner, in defining and maintaining user stories to be developed during the sprints, and sometimes and scrum team member to develop what the user stories require.

Required

- University-level scientific, mathematical or computer science education, entering final year.

- Ability to query SQL databases, ex. using the Cloudera Impala engine.

- Experience with data visualisation, using tools such as Qliksense, Tableau or Spotfire.

- Good communication skills in order to work efficiently with colleagues and share information with a wider audience. English is required.

Additional assets

- Experience with scripting or programming languages used for data mining and visualization.

- Experience in big data technologies like Hadoop.
