Over the last decade, Online Travel Agencies and Meta Search websites such as Expedia, Orbitz and Kayak have become key actors in the airline shopping business. The boom of the internet flight search is never-ending, with an increase rate of +30% transactional searches every year.
Increasing conversion (i.e. making sure that flight searches lead to the maximum bookings) is vital for Amadeus’s business:
•This can help us increase our search market share and therefore our search revenues
•The revenues from bookings that follow a shopping transaction represent a very large part of Amadeus’s revenues
In the Flight Inventory division, we are in a position to influence flight search conversion. One of our responsibilities is providing the availability of flights. A way to always get the right availability is to poll (i.e. ask airlines’ inventories what are the open classes), but this is not possible all the time, because of the limited bandwidth and response time of these inventories. Sometimes we need to rely on an internal cache.
A wrong availability can decrease conversion, and so can responding too slowly.
Three different teams in the Journey and Availability for Search department work on these challenges. You will arrive in the Research, Optimization & Innovation team and will interact with people from all these teams.
The focus of the internship is on how to decrease availability response time, i.e. make the choice of polling based on response time so as to decrease it, and without impacting quality too much. Response time is a critical driver for conversion. A number of studies directly link increases in response time with loss in conversion.
The intern will contribute in a study on response time driven polling, and build a prototype showcasing the main features of the solution. His/her main contributions will be to:
· Help the team to determine which response time data should be used (through logging, reporting, the implementation of specific scripts…) and acquire this data
· Participate in buildinga prototype showcasing the main features of the solution (based on data analysis or big data, depending on the data acquisition solution chosen) and integrate it in our current availability process
· Help the team tomeasure in a simple way the value brought by the solution in terms of response time gain and quality difference.
Previous experience in C++
Python and other software engineering languages is a plus
Technical, analytical skills and interest in solution and architecture design
Prioritization skills (80/20 mindset)
Proactivity and curiosity to establish relationships with people and other teams and understand the context of various projects
Fluency in English
