Description of the job

An exciting opportunity for a Vulnerability Engineer has arisen in Airbus Toulouse.

Within the Airframe Competence Centre, the department Airframe Stress Solutions develops and applies robust advanced solutions for nonlinear finite element modelling, structural vulnerability, advanced failure analysis, fatigue and damage tolerance, spectra, effects of defects, manufacturing process simulation and structural optimisation.

The open position of a Vulnerability Engineer (f/m) is allocated to the transnational Tech Centre 'Airframe Dynamic Solutions' to join the team at Airbus France Toulouse site.

You will be in charge of nonlinear finite element and vulnerability analyses with Abaqus/Explicit to support A/C program and R&T project teams, particularly focussing on fuselage crashworthiness and impact threat analysis of various structures (e.g. bird strike on wing or empennage structures, uncontained engine rotor failure, tyre debris impact on fuselage, main landing gear crashworthiness, hail impact on flaps, fuselage crash energy absorption concepts, water ditching, etc.).

You will provide answers to structural vulnerability problems according to business needs and contribute to innovation and continuous improvement of vulnerability analysis methods through research (R&T) or methods and tools (M&T) activities.

Tasks & accountabilities

Your main tasks and responsibilities will include:

• Performing numerical vulnerability (crash & impact) analyses for all A/C programs and R&T using Abaqus/Explicit,
• Finite element modelling of A/C structures and projectiles based on standardised methods incl. nonlinear modelling of metallic and composite/sandwich materials and joints with damage and failure,
• Generating detailed FE models based on CAD geometry input,
• Verifying vulnerability analysis simulation results and analysing structural integrity and state of damage; perform test-simulation correlation,
• Supporting Design, Stress, System or Certification teams for any vulnerability issues: deliver design recommendations, inputs for structure sizing and justify that the design is compliant with safety requirements,
• Managing his/her project autonomously, including planning and specification of the task with the customer and regular reporting,
• Coordination and verification of outsourced work (subcontractors and Airbus India),
• Presentation of results to project and/or certification teams and documentation in technical reports,
• Contributing to planning/specification and join impact test campaigns,
• Contributing to methods and tools improvement and research activities of the Tech Centre, in the framework of vulnerability or multi-disciplinary projects,
• Contributing to diversification tasks by vulnerability studies in collaboration with other Airbus Business Units or external partners.

This role will involve travel for business and as such you must be able to travel accordingly (typically one time per annual quarter).

This job requires an awareness of any potential compliance risks and a commitment to act with integrity, as the foundation for the Company’s success, reputation and sustainable growth.

Required skills

We are looking for candidates with the following skills and experience:

• Educated to a Master degree in Aeronautical Engineering or a related discipline,
• Experience in aircraft structure engineering,
• Experience in numerical simulation of crash or impact with explicit FE software,
• Experience in high-rate dynamic testing and correlation welcome,
• Strong knowledge of metallic and composite material and failure behaviour,
• Experience with Abaqus/Explicit,
• Knowledge of 3DExperience, Altair Hypermesh and/or CATIA welcome,
• Programming skills for tool developments welcome,
• Subcontractors management skills,
• Good communication skills (internally, with off-shore centre, externally),
• Ability to work in a transnational, diverse team environment with manager potentially at a different site,
• Negotiation level of English.
