Description of the job

Airbus Group Innovations (Suresnes) is looking for an intern (m/f) for a 6-month internship.

During the development phases, the geometry of an assembly is described through a digital mock-up. This mock-up considers that the constituent components of the assembly do not have any defects. In reality, manufacturing processes make that the actual geometry of the assembly differs from the geometry of the digital mock-up. At Airbus, the taking into account of defects in 3D models is currently the subject of many developments. The long-term objective is to improve the final quality of products, while reducing costs related to their manufacturing.

The internship will take place within the Airbus Group Innovations team in charge of the development of new digital simulation tools of assemblies. These tools are able to predict the behaviour of an assembly using mathematical and statistical models. The aim is to anticipate the propagation of defects on the assembly.

The work of the internship proposed will enrich current research by proposing solutions for the update of digital mock-ups based on pre-defined values or from measured samples. The internship will also integrate the new possibilities offered by recent developments in the field of Reverse Engineering. An original method for the updating and visualisation of the final mock-up of the assembly will be developed. The creation of an updated digital mock-up in accordance with data measured on an existing aircraft will be one of the long-term applications.

The aim of this internship involves in particular the set up of the digital processing chain dedicated to the visualisation of the digital mock-up integrating components with their defects. The work will have to rely on current models in order to propose its implementation on a typical Airbus case.

This internship will start on 1st May 2017 (subject to certain flexibility).

Tasks & accountabilities

Your main tasks will include:

·  Performing the state-of-the-art of current methods and tools for simulation of assemblies;
·  Setting up 3D models of components that are capable of including geometrical defects used for the simulation of assemblies;
·  Creating graphical tools for the visualisation of 3D models including updated geometry;
·  Implementing it on concrete assembly cases of aeronautical structures.

Required skills

You are in the final year of engineering school, completing a Master's degree or in the 5th year of university, specialising in IT/Mathematics/Mechanics.

You ideally have initial experience (internships, projects, personal developments) in relation with the topic.

You have skills in:

·  Programming (C/C++, Python and Matlab languages),
·  Geometrical modelling (parametric curves and surfaces, polyhedral meshing, etc.)
·  Basic knowledge of applied mathematics.

You have an independent nature, you are able to quickly grasp the context of the topic and are a driving force for suggesting improvements.

You are a good team player and have excellent interpersonal skills.

English: technical level,
French: fluent level.
