Internship / Improvement of a pre-design tool for launchers and orbital vehicles (m/f)

Airbus Safran Launchers Les Mureaux

Created by Airbus Group and Safran, Airbus Safran Launchers is a 50/50 joint venture bringing together the expertise and assets of both groups in terms of civil and military space launchers.
Its industrial and technological heritage, linked to the passion which drives the men and women of Airbus Safran Launchers, is what has enabled it to become the current world leader in space access.
Through clever operations at all levels, Airbus Safran Launchers offers innovative and competitive solutions to its customers, in order to bring the European space industry to its highest level and thereby guarantee independent access to space.

Airbus is a global leader in aeronautics, space and related services. In 2016, it generated revenues of € 67 billion and employed a workforce of around 134,000. Airbus offers the most comprehensive range of passenger airliners from 100 to more than 600 seats. Airbus is also a European leader providing tanker, combat, transport and mission aircraft, as well as Europe's number one space enterprise and the world's second largest space business. In helicopters, Airbus provides the most efficient civil and military rotorcraft solutions worldwide.

Description of the job

Airbus Safran Launchers (Les Mureaux) is looking for an intern (m/f) for a 6-month internship.

Within the "Civil Vehicle" Engineering Department, the "Vehicle Pre-project" Design Office is in charge of the design and the justification of future space launchers and orbital vehicles.
In this respect, the design office studies overall architecture, estimates and evaluates mechanical loads, designs and (pre-) dimensions the structure of the various vehicles. The Design Office develops the tools which are necessary to fulfil this mission. In particular, the department has developed an architecture design tool (launchers or orbital vehicles) to centralise the preliminary mechanical definition of the vehicle and to represent it in 3D.
The Design Office aims to improve this tool in order to take the needs related to the specificities of the future European launchers into account, while improving its handling by new users.

Therefore, the objectives in this internship will include:

·  Completing the tool features by implementing new mechanical structures related to the needs of the future launchers,
·  Implementing an interactive tutorial to guide the user through the discovery of the tool,
·  Participating in the definition and the implementation of a software configuration management structure.

This internship will start on 1st March 2017 (subject to some flexibility).

Tasks & accountabilities

You will be required to perform the following tasks:

·  Participating in a vehicle design project to discover and to understand the mechanical design process of a launcher or orbital vehicle architecture,
·  Collecting user needs for the tool (in particular, Ariane 6 designers),
·  Formalising the requirements related to the improvement of the tool,
·  Listing and implementing the calculation methods and the 3D representations related to the new mechanical structures to be studied,
·  Proposing an interactive tutorial architecture that can facilitate the handling of the tool,
·  Developing and deploying the architecture selected,
·  Creating a graphic, ergonomic and user-friendly interface,
·  Testing the improvements made to the tool with users.

Required skills

You are in the 2nd year of a Master's degree or in the 5th year of an engineering school, specialising in Computer Science.

Ideally, you have initial work experience.

You have the following knowledge/skills:

·  you will be required to design a software architecture: strong skills in object-oriented programming would be highly appreciated, as well as knowledge of UML or SYSML language,
·  aerospace vehicle design (aerodynamics, steering, propulsion, orbit, etc.),
·  mechanics (plate/beam theory).

You are a good team player and have excellent interpersonal skills.

English: intermediate level,
French: fluent level.
