Tasks & accountabilities

As part of this internship, you will develop and test a thermal switch used to thermally couple/decouple two sections of a test installation.

The aim of this internship is to validate the performance of on-board systems in a satellite; tests simulating the space environment are required. One of these tests consists in subjecting the specimen to hot/cold thermal cycles in a vacuum. For some of these tests, cryogenic temperatures (up to 8 K) are reached using a cryostat (cold finger), which is unfortunately not resistant to temperatures greater than 50 °C.

Therefore, to cycle a specimen thermally between a cryogenic temperature and a temperature greater than 50 °C, it is necessary to break "on request" the thermal link between the specimen and the cold finger for the hot phases and to reinforce this link for the cold phases. The aim of this internship is to develop this "thermal switch" based on a concept imagined by one of our thermal scientists.

Your main tasks will include:

·  Draw up a detailed specification of the need
·  Review (and modify, where applicable) the concept that was imagined
·  Thermal analyses and performance predictions for concept validation
·  Define and procure equipment
·  Tests to measure actual system performance

Required skills

We are looking for candidates with the following skills:

·  2nd year of a Master's degree or the 5th year of engineering or aerospace school, specialising in Thermal science and Fluid mechanics,
·  Good knowledge of fluid mechanics and thermal science, as well as modelling and simulation
·  Initial experience in test management would be a plus
·  You have a keen interest in, and the ability to carry out, manual work
·  Ability to work independently and a thorough way of working
·  You are inquisitive and open-minded
·  Advanced level of French; Intermediate level of English.
