Internship: Big Data Analysis for New Avionics Systems (m/f)

Airbus Toulouse

Airbus Group is a global leader in aeronautics, space and related services. In 2015, the Group - comprising Airbus, Airbus Defence and Space and Airbus Helicopters - generated revenues of € 64.5 billion and employed a workforce of around 136,600.

Our people work with passion and determination to make the world a more connected, safer and smarter place. Taking pride in our work, we draw on each other's expertise and experience to achieve excellence. Our diversity and teamwork culture propel us to accomplish the extraordinary - on the ground, in the sky and in space.

Description of the job

An internship position in Big Data Analysis for New Avionics Systems (m/f) has arisen within Airbus in Toulouse. You will join the “Cockpit Functions” department.
Are you willing to…
¤ Join a team that imagines differentiating products?
¤ Engage in strategic innovations related to Airbus cockpits and flight operations?
¤ Work closely with end users (pilots, airline operators…) to best match their needs?
¤ Participate to a change in culture and ways of working within systems design teams?

“Cockpit Functions & Operations” is the place where it all starts. We imagine tomorrow's concepts and functions to support safe and efficient airlines operations. Our playfield is huge, from cockpit to Air Traffic Management, including services offers, and our people are highly skilled, engaged and driven by end-user satisfaction for the benefit of the overall aviation community.

Within this context, there are a lot cockpit systems opportunities to improve the aircraft operations and in particular during the landing phase.
As examples:

·  the HUD (Head-Up Display) is allowing, in certain conditions, the reduction of Minima Decision Height and thus a better performance of the aircraft (avoidance of potential diversion).
·  The use of a camera as a new navigation sensor is also a source of operational improvements.

There are a lot of other examples. It is always based on the mutual use of existing sensors to increase the integrity/accuracy and/ or the use of new sensors.
Generally, the challenge is the demonstration of the benefits. How many missed approach could really be avoided with the adjunction of a new aircraft capability?

This study will be based on various data (on board) or database available on ground such as:

·  the tracking of the aircraft position received on ground infrastructures,
·  knowledge of the ATC/Airport procedures for the minima procedures
·  weather information
·  ATIS data (Airport information sent to the pilot before landing)

All of this data can be computed in order to determine the conditions of aircraft operational disruptions and assess if new aircraft capabilities could reduce the number of these disruptions
This internship will start in February 2017 (date subject to some flexibility).

Tasks & accountabilities

Your main tasks and activities will be to:

·  Understand the aeronautical concepts leading to aircraft diversions at the airport
·  Collect all available data which could help to understand the events leading to diversion (meteo, a/c trackings, Atis...)
·  State of the art new data science algorithms applicable to determine new opportunities to reduce aircraft diversion based on data analysis
·  Make a prototype of the various potential solutions.

You will integrate a multi-disciplinary team (engineers, people with operational knowledge of a flight and of the use of an aircraft, human factors).

Required skills

As the successful candidate, you should be able to demonstrate the following skills and competencies:

·  in the 2nd year of your Master's or 5th year of University or an Engineering school, specialising in mathematics, data science and/or statistics,
·  Initial experience/good knowledge of data science,
·  Knowledge of prototypes development with languages like Python, R, etc. to analyse a wide set of data,
·  Ideally civil aircraft operations generic knowledge,
·  Strong and active listening and dialog skills,
·  Prone to take initiatives, make proposals, create new ideas,
·  Ability to work with different disciplines,
·  Advanced level of English.
