Internship / Automated Validation Database for a CFD Code (m/f)

Airbus Safran Launchers Les Mureaux

A 50–50 joint venture established by Airbus Group and Safran, Airbus Safran Launchers brings together all the expertise and assets of these two industry leaders in the fields of civil and military launch vehicles.
Backed by European governments and space agencies, supported by the entire industrial sector, Airbus Safran Launchers offers in a single entity all the capabilities, experience, resources and capacity for innovation necessary to instigate and drive forward the changes needed today and in the future.
With agility embedded right across its business, Airbus Safran Launchers can offer its customers particularly innovative, competitive solutions, striving to boost European space industry to the highest level and guarantee independent access to space.

Airbus Group is a global leader in aeronautics, space and related services. In 2015, the Group - comprising Airbus, Airbus Defence and Space and Airbus Helicopters - generated revenues of € 64.5 billion and employed a workforce of around 136,600.

Our people work with passion and determination to make the world a more connected, safer and smarter place. Taking pride in our work, we draw on each other's expertise and experience to achieve excellence. Our diversity and teamwork culture propel us to accomplish the extraordinary - on the ground, in the sky and in space.

Description of the job

Airbus Safran Launchers (Les Mureaux) is looking for an intern for a 6-months internship.

FLUSEPA is a CFD code initially developed by Airbus Safran Lauchers for aerodynamics and propulsion studies.
It has been widely upgraded during more than 20 years and now provides with unique features in the aerodynamic and propelling flows domains: Unsteady simulations:

·  Launcher staging (multi bodies & relative movements),
·  Blast wave at lift-off,
·  Environments at motor ignition (side loads, re-burning…),
·  Very Large Eddy simulations (unsteady turbulence),
·  Interstellar probes dynamic stability at reentry,
·  Base flow buffeting…

Two-phases flows (missiles ejection, wake flow signature, propelling jets)
Steady aerodynamic flows, from subsonic to hypersonic regimes.

·  Aerodynamic coefficients databases
·  Distributed and local loadings (stages, fairings, protrusions).

This is the reference tool for Ariane 6 developments.
It is also intensely used in the framework of New Generation Launchers and reusable winged space vehicle projects like ADELINE.
The FLUSEPA code is considered as the keystone of future developments.
Current projects are performed in the framework of cooperations with research laboratories concerning VLES methods with re-burning phenomena, HPC/massive parallelism, automated mesh adaptation and the improvement of numerical schemes.

This internship will start on 1st February 2017 (subject to some flexibility).

Tasks & accountabilities

Three stages of the present validation project have already been performed:

·  Versioning of the source code and the validation database.
·  Generation of executable files for various available platforms and centralised distribution for users;
·  Automated building of a test cases database for the non-regression assessment of new versions.

This is made of a large number of small computation test cases, chosen to enable the quick examination of all functionalities; building of a validation database.

The next steps, which constitute the training course consist in:

·  Improving the automatic chains for the non-regression and validation processes.
·  Enriching the non-regression database, using some of the validation test cases and new test cases.
·  Enlarging the validation database.

This consists in the identification of reference test cases (analytical solutions, experiments…) for the creation of validation files.
These files should cover as far as possible all kind of flows which can be treated by the code. For the present training period emphasis will be put on the validation of new features of the code which concern the simulation of two phases "air plus condensed water" flows.
These test cases will be run with the reference beta version of the CFD code and will be managed in the validation database.
This part of the work will necessitate all the classical activities linked with numeric aerodynamic studies: grid construction, computation and post treatments.
