Job Description

Motivation: Increasing demands on economic efficiency z. B. of commercial aircraft lead to the development of new materials concepts to optimally use the performance of the materials. The high strength aluminum alloys used in aircraft structures for their high specific strength require proof of sufficient damage tolerance. In particular, the fatigue and cracking behavior of these materials under different environmental conditions is of interest to be evaluated. The aim of the work is to characterize the cracking and fatigue behavior (crack initiation / propagation) of high-strength Al materials as a function of the load and environment under selected relevant parameters.

Content: • Literature study on the environmental dependence of the cracking and fatigue behavior of aluminum • Planning and execution of stress corrosion, fatigue and crack propagation tests on Al alloys under environmental influence. • Evaluation of the experiments with suitable methods with regard to crack initiation, crack growth, etc. (fractography, metallography and surface analysis) • Contribution to the clarification of failure mechanisms • Contribution to modelling of failure behavior and life prediction

The experimental work is performed in the laboratories of Airbus Central R+T in Ottobrunn

Knowledge: Good theoretical knowledge in the field of metallurgy of Al alloys, fracture mechanics; practical experience in mechanical testing, data acquisition and the performance of laboratory experiments. Education: Materials Science, physics, physical chemistry or comparable directions.

This job requires an awareness of any potential compliance risks and a commitment to act with integrity, as the foundation for the Company’s success, reputation and sustainable growth.
