Solvay is a major supplier of fibre reinforced polymer composites to the aerospace and automotive industries. The use of thermoset carbon fibre reinforced composite materials in primary structure demands high performance mechanical properties such as damage and impact resistance.

Thermoset resin matrix having a high crosslink density is brittle so that it needs to be toughened. Soluble Thermoplastic Technology is thus adopted by Composites Industry. It relies on the initial solubility of the thermoplastic (TP) in thermoset resin precursors (TS) leading to the TP phase separation upon TS curing.

As part of a PhD thesis, the challenges are to fully understand and control the resulting morphology in relation with thermoset resin applicative properties. The objectives include the characterization of cure kinetics and thermodynamics of TP/TS blend.

The system of study is composed of epoxy monomers cured by diamine curing agents and of polyethersulfone.
