Our team overview
The System Test Rigs team, part of the System Engineering department, are responsible for designing and building complex simulation systems that allow railway signalling and control equipment for main line, metro, and light rail projects to be prototyped, integrated, tested and proven in a lab environment.

Test rigs range in scale from simulations running on a couple of PCs up to large Integration Facilities with many server cabinets worth of trackside and train borne equipment, signalman’s panels, and a mock-ups of train cabs. 

As the Systems Engineer you will work within a team structure delivering detailed system engineering solutions with short to medium goals as dictated by their team leader or manager.
The role will balance strong technical requirement and design and skills with the ability to deliver within demanding timescales.  

Your role, and what you’ll be doing
In this role you will work as part of a small software development team to develop and support the test rig automation, data preparation and test analysis tools required to support, operate, and provide training on the System Test Rigs. 

The jobholder will be expected to work and communicate effectively with fellow regional Siemens employees in the R&D department and the Project Delivery Teams as well as nationally and internationally and with the client when required.

Key responsibilities of a Systems Engineer

·  Author sub-system and software design specifications
·  Author interface specifications
·  Creation of new, and support of existing automation code modules written with AutoIT or other scripting languages
·  Participation in software version management and configuration control
·  Integration of component subsystems into a single system
·  Test automation failure investigation and fault identification
·  Configuration and continuous improvement of test rigs in support of system integration
·  Execution of System Integration & Validation Test procedures and Test Scripts
·  Review and inspection of design submissions from external suppliers
·  Investigation and resolution of system or product level technical issues in hardware development, software development and system integration, cooperatively with safety engineering, verification and validation functions
·  Provide support to the production of system application manuals
What do you need to qualify for the role

·  Educated to degree level (or equivalent) in an engineering, scientific or numerate discipline (essential)
·  Experience with BASIC-like scripting languages designed for automating Windows environments and general scripting. Ideally using AutoIT (essential)
·  Knowledge of having applied systems engineering practices in one or more mission critical, software intensive application domains (essential)
·  Thorough understanding of systems engineering and configuration management processes and related tools (essential)
·  Experience of working to industry quality and applicable standards (essential)
·  Motivated, dependable, and self-reliant (essential)
·  Experience in the development of Signalling Systems, Automatic Train Protection products, or other large programmable electronic systems
·  Familiarity with hardware and software lifecycles, associated tools, techniques and methodologies
