POSITION OVERVIEW

The Packaging Design Manager leads the Package Design and Development (PDD) function and is responsible for supporting packaging solutions for products manufactured in Ridgefield, NJ.

Our products are marketed both domestically and internationally, therefore require updates based on regulatory and market requirements. This role functions in a cGMP environment and is focused on developing primary, secondary, and tertiary pharmaceutical packaging solutions which require technical documentation and specification to support manufacturing and transportation of finished drug and device products. PDD provides technical and project support to achieve a defined quality requirements / improvements, cost reduction, and packaging material changes due to updates in technical and sourcing requirements. The tasks and activities performed by this position will be driven by changes required by regulatory authorities, international affiliates, and local capital projects. The employee will conduct technical performance evaluations of packaging materials based on defined test and documentation procedures and will provide written evaluation of new packaging materials, specifications, systems and technology for potential use in existing and future packaging lines. This position interacts internally with production engineers, validation, purchasing, distribution, and quality assurance. This position will also interact externally with packaging material and equipment vendors to coordinate deployment of packaging technology. The Packaging Design Manager must follow department and corporate procedures and standards.

Responsibilities:

· 
Collaborates with packaging operations, purchasing, validation, and QA to help formulate project objectives based on collective requirements.

· 
Conducts technical and financial evaluations of packaging material/supplier alternatives.

· 
Conducts packaging material and system testing and helps establish performance characteristics.

· 
Develop engineering protocol, execute on the line, and summary technical reports based on the test results for packaging systems.

· 
Develop and update required packaging material specification changes.

· 
Develop and update artwork based on regulatory and market requirements.

· 
Provides trouble-shooting assistance to packaging related production issues.

· 
Investigates new packaging material/suppliers for cost and/or performance improvement.

· 
Conduct non-conformance investigations based on issues found with packaging material or systems.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience

· 
BS in Packaging Science or Engineering AND

· 
1-3 years pharmaceutical or technically related experience AND

· 
3-5 years in technical packaging operations and project management

Technical Skills & Competencies/Language

· 
Understand secondary packaging unit operations and equipment

· 
Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign)

· 
Knowledge of color management system (PMS) related to artwork design and pre-press artwork

· 
Has general understanding and knowledge of USP and ASTM testing requirements and procedures for packaging materials and systems.

· 
Demonstrates general knowledge of basic primary, secondary, and tertiary packaging material types, their performance characteristics and manufacturing processes.

· 
Basic abilities to evaluate technical information and material performance data to make conclusions and recommendations using basic scientific documentation principles.

· 
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills required to troubleshoot problems with machinery and issues with the packaging process.

· 
Some knowledge in project management including budgeting, scheduling, and vendor management a plus.

· 
Knowledge of deviation and investigation processing through an electronic system

· 
Document management system and electronic work flow system

· 
Work with SAP or other MRP systems to track packaging inventory

· 
Fluent in written and spoken English, knowledge of foreign language could benefit in working with packaging artwork for foreign markets

· 
Strong leadership capabilities

· 
Presentation skills to convey and influence design ideas

· 
Cooperate transversally with key departments to achieve department goals
