Job description

Job Description

Apply scientific and technical skill in Medicinal Chemistry research and laboratory techniques in support of chemistry efforts across Global Discovery Chemistry (GDC), for research on variety of indications and targets in chemistry projects for drug discovery covering Respiratory, Oncology, Ophthalmology, Cardiovascular and Metabolism (CVM), Neuroscience, and Infectious diseases. Conduct experiments and procedures to execute organic chemistry reactions with minimal input from supervisor. Carry out chemical reactions to test hypotheses and explore structural activity relationships (SAR) between compounds and targets, in order to increase potency and desirable properties. Provide data analysis and assist in design of next experiment as needed. Document experiments in lab notebook (including tables, graphs). Present results to supervisor, and present to lab at project meetings as required. Utilize literature searches and knowledge and experience in computer aided drug design (CADD) and parallel chemistry for drug discovery to best design synthetic routes. Utilize analytical techniques such as LC-MS, TLC, Prep HPLC, Prep SFC, and NMR to confirm the structure of compounds. Perform structural elucidation, confirmation and purity analysis by LC-MS, GC-MS, NMR and TGA. Utilize in-vivo and in-vitro methods to determine activity and property information, and drive planning of new compounds. Use computation techniques such as crystal structures and structural overlays to drive optimization of compounds. Interpret data generated by cross functional partners to improve compounds. Implement new lab techniques according to literature. Maintain laboratory infrastructure. Perform duties and make recommendations on standard laboratory tools and procedures. Assist in preparation of SOPs as required. Conduct activities according to the appropriate SOP, GLP, GMP, other guidelines. Follow established HSE policies and procedures, and conduct activities in compliance with Novartis safety, waste disposal and other regulatory guidelines. Operate and perform routine maintenance on instruments. Identify and report unsafe equipment, conditions and practices so that they may be corrected. Use microscale for reaction optimization and automation to scout reactions. Understand, interpret, and present in-vivo and in vitro pharmacology data from in-vivo studies to team members as required.
