As an Investigative Pathologist working in Oncology Translational Research, you will provide scientific and clinical expertise for informing patient selection strategies and biomarker development. You will facilitate the successful evaluation of novel agents in early phase clinical trials and join the global Pathology and Biomarkers team to partner across the full range of Oncology programs (small molecule, biotherapeutics and Immuno-Oncology), from target identification through First-in-Human studies.

• Provide strategic scientific and clinical input to the Oncology Pathology group and project teams internationally
• Work closely with research and early clinical project teams (Scientists and Physician-Scientists) to design and interpret tissue-based experiments with evaluation of biomarkers in human and xenograft samples via techniques such as IHC, ISH, IF, LCM, NGS and protein assays
• Lead scientific associates to design and conduct experiments, to interpret and challenge experimental results
• Network internally and externally with other pathologists, clinicians and scientists on project activities
• Engage in independent research with colleagues across Oncology Translational Research and broader Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research Disease Areas and Translational Medicine groups with an emphasis on technology development and innovation in assessment of tissue specimens
• Design and implement biomarker plans for Novartis early phase clinical trials including assay development and analysis
• Author internal reports and presentations
• Champion writings of external publications and patent applications
• Conduct and supervise your lab to ensure compliance with HSE guidelines and policies

Minimum requirements

• MD or MD/PhD with formal training in anatomic pathology. Or, DVM/PhD with significant clinical and biomarker expertise
• Strong research experience (PhD-level) in pathology, molecular genetics, immunology or related field
• Haematopathology fellowship or experience characterizing immune infiltrates
• Credible experience working with Physician-Scientists and scientific Clinical teams involving patient selection, Biomarker strategies, and other relevant clinical trial activities
• Successful generation and implementation of new Translational Research ideas
• Demonstrated expertise in tissue-based analysis, such as interpretation of IHC, interpretation of tissue microarrays, and image analysis
• Working knowledge of DNA/RNA based methodologies for tissue-based analysis is preferred
• Strong international collaboration and project experience with demonstrated ability to maintain and develop your own professional networks. Used to working with a range of different cultures and thinking styles in an international matrix environment.
• Demonstrated success in supervising and mentoring scientific / technical teams and individuals
• Collaborative, innovative, self-directed, with outstanding teamwork and communication skills
• Business-level/advanced English
