Scientist Omics Technology (permanent position)

Janssen Research & Development seeks to drive innovation and deliver transformational medicines for the treatment of diseases in six therapeutic areas: neuroscience, cardiovascular diseases and metabolism, infectious diseases, immunology, oncology and pulmonary hypertension. In these areas, Janssen aims to address and solve unmet medical needs through the development of small and large molecules, as well as vaccines. The Janssen campus in Beerse (Belgium) has a unique ecosystem covering the complete drug development life cycle, with all capabilities from basic science to market access on one campus. The integrated environment of our campus gives our people the chance to experience many different aspects of drug development throughout their career. It has a successful track record of over sixty years of drug discovery and development and is one of the most important innovation engines of the Janssen group worldwide.

Developing innovative therapeutics to treat diseases like Alzheimer's disease, various types of cancers and infectious diseases like Hepatitis B, influenza is our passion. In this endeavor, we are recruiting new talent to apply and develop state-of-the-art omics approaches for drug discovery programs. This scientist position will be opened on the Beerse campus, which is the flagship R&D center for small molecules within Janssen, investing over 1 billion euros each year in R&D.

POSITIONS SUMMARY

The Computational Sciences group has invested heavily in developing both wet-lab and dry-lab facilities for omics analyses. Various (single cell) omics technologies are operational within the team (e.g. microarrays, next-generation sequencing, 10xGenomics , flow cytometry, mass spectrometry proteomics, etc.). These technologies are crucial for drug safety profiling and discovery programs in the therapeutic areas (neuro-inflammation, (auto-)immune diseases, immuno-oncology, infectious diseases).

We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate to join the European Computational Sciences team, with the primary aim to further develop our wet lab omics capabilities in support of drug discovery and safety profiling activities. The successful candidate will have a deep understanding of different (single cell) omics technologies and is proficient with bioinformatic tools for analyzing and interpreting omics data. A good knowledge of genetics and pathway biology is essential to understand the needs and scientific questions from the collaborating teams and to assist them in the interpretation of the omics findings. While the position will be based in Beerse (Belgium), it will support global teams in the different therapeutic areas. As this line of work is inherently interdisciplinary, we are searching for a candidate that will drive internal (computational team, therapeutic and functional areas) and external collaborations (academic and industry).

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will:

·  Work closely with therapeutic area teams to understand their scientific and technical challenges.
·  Play a key role in the interactions with other omics experts in functional and therapeutic areas (toxicology, oncology, immunology, infectious diseases, neuroscience).
·  Design, plan, execute and analyze omics experiments in close collaboration with the computational team.
·  Develop novel state-of-the-art single cell and multi-omics technologies that impact drug discovery research and safety profiling projects.
·  Work collaboratively with the computational team to define the required analytical tools for analysis and interpretation of the generated omics data.
·  Use bioinformatic tools, developed by the computational team, to analyze and interpret omics data.
·  Collaborate with industry and academia, and exploit external resources, to find the most effective solutions to complex biological problems.
·  Be responsible for written and verbal communication of study results to project teams, including proposals for further experiments to validate key findings.

Desired profile

Qualifications

PROFILE

·  PhD in molecular biology, genetics, etc. combined with a deep understanding of (single cel) omics technologies, supported by publications in this area.
·  Post-doctoral experience in an academic or industrial setting is a plus.
·  Ability to develop and implement novel (single cell) omics protocols, experience with lab automation is a plus.
·  Ability to use bioinformatic/statistical tools to interpret complex omics datasets (e.g. microarrays, next-generation sequencing, flow cytometry, mass spectrometry proteomics, etc.). Knowledge of appropriate programming languages and software is a plus (R,Python).
·  Strong written and oral presentation capabilities, with a convincing record of peer-reviewed publications and presentations at scientific conferences.
·  Ability to clearly articulate scientific and operational concepts of biomarker research across functions, levels, and disciplines.
·  High intrinsic motivation in combination with strong scientific curiosity and a high level of autonomy.
·  Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work productively in a highly dynamic environment.
·  Strong team orientation, highly collaborative and results-oriented.
·  Good planning, prioritization, problem solving, and organizational skills.
·  Knowledge and understanding of the regulatory, legal and operational requirements of sample collection and data handling for omics analyses in clinical studies is a plus.
