Summary

Initiates, directs and executes all pre-clinical scientific research and/or development strategies in research and/or development. Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products and problems. Plans and executes laboratory research. Maintains broad knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories. Makes major contributions to scientific literature and conferences. May act as spokesperson on corporate research and development and advise top management. May participate in development of patent applications. Interfaces with various departments and serves as internal consultant.

Responsibilities

Lead, organize, facilitate and analyze scientific projects, plan scientific activities and devise strategies for achieving goals exercising considerable creativity in determining objectives of scientific work. Lead multiple projects team consisting of scientists, research associates and/or employees across multiple functional areas.

Plan and execute laboratory research. Create novel experimental protocols making significant scientific contributions. Provide critical and creative evaluation of scientific data and detailed interpretation of results.

Lead in efforts to define new products, and resolve technical challenges in product development.

Influence, persuade and negotiate across company wide functional areas.

Lead, coach and mentor Research Associate and Scientist level staff.

Independently determine and develop scientific analysis and solutions.

Drive activities for publication and/or patent potential.

Present and discuss data, present alternative action plans (and consequences), and clearly communicate recommendations to any level of the organization.

Pursue and communicate objectives and planning options without supervision.

Make major contributions to strategic directions through knowledge of technology and its creative applications.

Qualifications

PHD required* plus 8+ years of relevant experience

*May also include exceptional individuals without an advanced degree by Executive Committee approval.

Master's degree with 12+ years of relevant experience

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Experience with primary and special staining.

Experience with assay development and requirements for IVD product development.

Understanding of Anatomical pathology Lab practices, users, customers and workflow.

Demonstrated independent experimental design, evaluation and analysis.

Expert knowledge of relevant sub-specialty field.

Demonstrated independent and creative technical and leadership abilities.

Knowledge of project management techniques and ability to manage by and meet deadlines.

Knowledge of laboratory techniques, data evaluation skills, and an in-depth knowledge of pertinent literature.

Through knowledge of new product development and introduction, and project management skills.

Ability to write SOPs and manufacturing formulations supporting new reagents, probes or detection systems.

Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to prepare and present information to groups.

Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet, database and email software.
