Job description

  Job facts

Digital technologies have brought revolution to healthcare industry and posed great opportunities to understanding diseases and drug development. Continuous, objective remote patient monitoring utilizing mobile devices have shed lights on previously unavailable information about the disease impact on patients' daily lives such as the activity level and posture transition frequency of Parkinson's disease patients.

Roche Pharma Research and Early Development (pRED), as a leader in drug development and clinical digital technology, is seeking to expand our digital biomarker development in a broader range of diseases. One of the most challenging projects is to assess the social impact of psychiatric disorders such as autism spectrum disorder and schizophrenia. Although social impairment is one of the most burdensome negative symptoms of these diseases, there has been few efforts for objective social impairment inference in a clinical setting. The lack of clinically feasible sociability assessment workflow to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment has also hindered the drug development progress.

This postdoctoral research project aims to develop innovative ways to address this challenge. As a postdoctoral research fellow, you will focus on developing an artificial intelligence (AI) application to derive a patient-centric view on sociability using ambient noise data collected from mobile devices. The goal of the project is to prove the feasibility of continuous ambient noise monitoring while addressing the challenges of patient privacy, as well as the clinical value of the derived sociability assessment. In this two-year engagement, you will have the opportunity to:

·  Build an industry-leading clinical application for AI-based ambient noise analysis that will directly facilitate drug development for patients with autism or schizophrenia.
·  Advance the science and technology in digital biomarker development that would shape how the world uses mobile devices.
·  Work with a vibrant global data science team to implement production-level sociability assessment pipeline that will be deployed in real-world clinical trials.
·  Publish innovations and findings in high-impact journals and present at international symposia.

Qualifications:

We are looking for a highly motivated individual with a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Applied Physics or related discipline, who has a passion for driving science through technology, spirit of teamwork, and excellent communication skills that will thrive in a multi-disciplinary team to deliver best results. A successful candidate will have some of the following skills or experience:

·  Expertise in Python.
·  Expertise in signal processing, preferably in audio signal processing including voice detection, source separation and speaker identification.
·  Experience with Deep Learning.
·  Experience in working with patient data.
·  Experience in Android / iOS system is a plus.
·  Experience in natural language processing is also a plus.
