Position and mission:
Research Trainee – Microbes & Genetic Engineering
- Development by genetic engineering of enzyme production strains
- Analytical support within the framework of new projects, in connection with other research teams
Key tasks:
- Genetic constructions allowing homologous and heterologous expression of enzymes and transformation in selected microorganisms and/or strains (30%)
- Analysis technics for transformants/enzymes obtained + data processing and reporting: (25%)
°Molecular biology (cloning, PCR, Southern blot, Northern blot, preparation for sequencing,…)
°Biochemical analysis (Protein gel, Western-blot, enzymatic assays,…)
°Microbiological analysis (phenotype, morphotype, robotic picking,…)
- Microbiological cultures: evaluation of wild type strains and transformants obtained in solid and liquid media in order to assess the level of enzymes expression (20%)
- Analytical support within the framework of new projects, in connection with other research teams (fermentation, pilot, downstream, PI, Regulatory, Production and QC) (5%)
- Contribute to the common tasks of the department (10%)
°Participation in the common tasks of functioning of the general laboratory and the laboratory of molecular biology and microbiology, update c-project in SAP
°Ordering and reception of orders, management and maintenance of equipment
°Promote 5S method
- Supervision of students (10%)
Profile:
- Bachelor or Junior Engineer in Biochemistry or Biotechnology
- Demonstrate technical skills in microbiology, molecular biology, genetic engineering, and biochemistry
List of technics:
°Basic technics in molecular biology (DNA purification, PCR, cloning, etc)
°Microbiology technics (work under laminar flow, media preparation, etc)
°Preparation of bacterial competent cells
°SDS-PAGE – zymograms
°Blots (Southern, Western, Northern)
°Preparation of Working Cell Bank – Growth tests
°Robotic picking
°Evaluation of strains in liquid cultures (Robotic High Throughput Screening, flasks)
- Ability to follow research protocols with attention to detail
- A strong organizational and record keeping skills
- Results driven
- Fluent in written and spoken English
- Ready to live in Belgium
