Job description

Job Summary:

The System Engineering Manager is responsible for coordination and implementation of all system and software efforts related to mining trucks. They have responsibility for the group that researches, develops, designs, and tests electrical, electromechanical, hydraulics and software control systems for mining products.

Essential Job Duties:

· Designs systems and controls; recommends equipment and components for systems, which include, but are not limited to low and high voltage electrical, hydraulic, and the various supporting subsystems.
· Designs, develops, and evaluates software code for control systems on mining equipment.
· Creates and maintains specifications for truck control systems for use on new and existing mining equipment.
· Researches and analyzes data such as customer design proposals, truck data, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application.
· Maintains the documentation for hardware, software, and system application that supports records for further development and operational field maintenance.
· Manages distribution of control software on mining equipment and maintains overall code responsibility including drive control and peripherals (e.g. new technology).
· Manages development, production, and validation testing of prototype software, systems, and/or electrical components.
· Develops applications of controls, instruments, and systems for new products and improvement of existing products.
· Manages and/or conducts field testing for optimization of control.
· Sets priorities of software group.
· Researches solutions to system software required to meet specifications.
· Analyzes and implements software tools necessary to perform validation, diagnostics, and commissioning.
· Organizes software structure to ensure stable operating system.
· Responsible for remote diagnostic efforts (e.g. satellite communication) and support of third party interfaces.
· Researches and implements fault detection algorithms and related reporting.
· Evaluates alternative software programming tools and languages.
· Estimates time and cost requirements for software related projects.
· Interfaces with other groups/disciplines to create specifications that outline control system software necessary for haul truck functions.
· Creates the algorithms and code necessary to control haul truck functions.
· Creates and maintains the documentation/specifications necessary to describe the software logic flow and architecture.
· Works with Production Engineers to specify proper control components (PLC’s, mobile computers, HMI, and other associated hardware).
· Responsible for implementing current software project management methods (e.g. Agile/SCRUM).
· Works independently and as a team member with other engineers, designers, and production personnel or on ad hoc projects.
· Participates in Engineering Development Program.

Supervisory Duties:

· Directly supervises employees in the systems group.
· Responsible for the overall direction, coordination and evaluation of the systems group.
· Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.
· Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Position Specific Competencies:

Job Skills: Applies the required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) in the performance of essential job duties:

· Comprehensive knowledge of the design, specification, and utilization of PLC control on mobile equipment.
· Knowledge of software programming tools (ex. CoDeSys, C++, etc.).
· Ability to optimize, troubleshoot, and validate software code.
· Knowledge of communication protocols (ex. RS232, CanOpen, J1939, etc.).
· Knowledge of diagnostic and validation tools necessary to verify software stability and function.
· Ability to write specifications that describe software function.
· Working knowledge of communication networks and vehicle communication bus architecture.
· Knowledge of signal processing techniques.
· Knowledge of all major truck systems and the interaction between systems, including drive systems, control systems, hydraulic systems, and mechanical systems.
· Knowledge of electric drive systems as applied to mining equipment, in particular to the application of diesel-electric haul trucks.
· Knowledge of project management principles relevant to software development.
· Knowledge of Project Management tools (ex. Microsoft Project).
· Ability to use MS Office.
· Knowledge of BaaN system as it relates to truck BOM structure and inventory control.
· Ability to read and write electrical and hydraulic schematics.
· Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance manuals, and procedure manuals.
· Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
· Ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts such as exponents, logarithms, quadratic equations, and permutations.
· Ability to apply mathematical operations to such tasks as frequency distribution, determination of test reliability and validity, analysis of variance, correlation techniques, sampling theory, and factor analysis.

Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree (B.S.) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or related engineering discipline from a four-year college or university plus six years’ experience; or Associate’s degree (A.S.) or related engineering discipline with eight or more years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. A minimum of two years of supervisory experience.

Additional Requirements:

· Is expected to travel nationally and internationally up to 20% to customer or supplier sites for durations up to three weeks.
· Ability to complete and maintain mine certifications or safety training such as Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) hazard training.
· Ability to obtain and maintain a valid driver’s license and passport.
