Position: Merchant, Illusion
Department: Victoria’s Secret Lingerie
Reports To: VP Merchandising, Bras

The Merchant helps to develop a book of business’ strategies and seasonal assortment plans based on a detailed knowledge of the brand, intimate understanding of the customer, and studied appreciation of the competition and overall market place. He/she critically evaluates the assortment and reacts to in-season performance/trends and translates to future seasons. The Merchant demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the connection between financial strategies and related merchandise objectives. He/she collaborates directly with various cross-functional teams to ensure execution of one brand vision. The Merchant must possess strong leadership skills as he/she is ultimately responsible for driving the cross-functional communications and motivating the team to be customer-focused, curious and collaborative.

Responsibilities:
Leadership and Strategy
 Align book of business strategy with total store strategy and drive VSL growth.
 Ensure strategy and assortment execution align with constantly changing customer demands through a detailed understanding of sku level performance, market distortions, and seasonal builds.
 Drive category business with “out of the box” thinking that connects financial trends and market/store insights.
 Lead day-to-day communication and alignment between all members of the cross-functional team.
 Partner with Production and Planning to influence sourcing/speed initiatives and ensure execution.
 Ensure strategic alignment between business channels in order to protect and deliver a one brand experience.
 Leverage relationships with store partners and customer insights to develop strategies, drive growth and execute a well-told story.
Financial
 Accountable for sales and margin targets for a book of business.
 Develop lineplan architecture by season and ensure seamless execution at all developmental and financial milestones.
 Understand product life cycle, trends and financial data at the category level in order to manage in-season opportunities and drive growth.
 Partner with deployment and demand forecasters to maximize sales, recognize nuances and dig into opportunities.
 Maximize margin targets through assortment architecture and product knowledge.
 Review and approve assortment investments and recommend action plans.
 Identify financial trends and maximize them based on store and customer preference.
Product
 Work with partners (design, sourcing, production) to create and execute product details that correlate with the positioning of the brand, trend and margin growth.
 Maximize customer experience by driving execution of all sales education, marketing and visual requests for the product category (pre-season and in-season).
 Be the expert of the competitive environment and use knowledge to positively impact results on a book of business.
 Identify product voids/white space opportunities through intimate understanding of the customer in order to strengthen the overall assortment.
Talent
 Train, motivate and develop team to ensure effective performance and growth through consistent on-the-job training.
 Act as a role model within the company by coaching and teaching team members to work together and remain focused.
 Manage a minimum of one direct report.

Qualifications

 College degree or equivalent experience
 3 – 5 years in retail buying organization with 1 – 2 years of management experience
 Successful track record for high volume or complex business growth and bottom line results
 Demonstrates effective leadership skills, shopkeeper mentality and strategic thinking
 Ability to be a team player and to foster a commitment to team work among other associates
 Intimate understanding of competition, target customer and brand specific fashion trends
 Ability to adapt well to diverse audiences and environments
 Systems savvy
