Job description

The Core Engineer (Linux Infrastructure) role exists in the UNIX Platform Engineering team within HSBC Operations Services and Technology (HOST).

The role offers an exciting opportunity to work as part of a team of highly-experienced and qualified OS Engineers located across the globe (Hong Kong, India, Europe and US), tackling a variety of technical challenges that will develop and push you to the limits of your knowledge.

The role holder is to provide global technical leadership in the design, engineering, implementation and maintenance of the Red Hat and SUSE Linux platform and associated tooling, infrastructure and storage. Its purpose and vision are to engineer, define and govern efficient and innovative Linux platforms and infrastructure in support of the global businesses, through collaboration and driving standardisation of technology platforms and solutions. The role holder must also drive operational excellence across our businesses worldwide, achieving this through the consolidation, simplification and continuous improvement of processes across the full range of HSBC operations.

Your responsibilities will include:

· Provide platform services which enable faster delivery of highly standardised platform services, for example, Virtualisation, ALM, Dev Engineering, GSDE, and Cloud.
· Provide 3 rd line support to customers
· Set global Linux standards, tested and certified in our lab facility
· Work with vendors, produce best practice solutions for the domain
· Provide consultancy, guidance and collaborate with architecture, projects, support and other engineering teams
· Contribute to the development of Cloud based infrastructure platforms and deliver infrastructure, platform etc. “as a Service” by working with Business & other DevOps teams
· Contribute to the preparation of patch bundles and new operating system builds and to the overall security compliance of the estate through close working with Cyber security
· Maintain and enhance the processes and infrastructure that deliver our global operating system builds for both the latest technologies and our legacy estate
· Understand and contribute to the development of Continuous Integration / Continuous Delivery pipeline, and advise on the development of automated test scripts (for infrastructure products and upgrades), and the build of automation interfaces between systems

Desired profile

Qualifications :

The ideal candidate for this role will have the below experience and qualifications:

·  Proven expertise in Red Hat Linux versions 5, 6 and 7 and preferably good working knowledge SUSE SLES 10 and 11
·  Knowledge and experience of Red Hat Satellite, Zypper, Yum
·  Excellent scripting skills
·  Excellent problem solving skills and experience providing support to a wide customer base
·  A desire to find ways to continually improve the service delivered to customers
·  A track record of constantly looking for ways to do things better and an excellent understanding of the mechanism necessary to successfully implement change
·  Excellent written and spoken communication skills; an ability to communicate with impact, ensuring complex information is articulated in a meaningful way to wide and varied audiences
·  Experience of creating and deploying comprehensive business/operating plans which consistently deliver desired results
·  A comprehensive understanding of risk management and proven experience of ensuring own/others' compliance with relevant regulatory processes

In addition to the details listed above, the ideal candidate will have a track record of:

·  Experience of one or more of the following: Puppet, Ansible, HPSA, Chef, GIT, Jira and Confluence
·  Proven programming ability especially using Python or Perl
·  Experience of working in an Engineering team supporting a large, highly regulated estate
·  High quality documentation skills

The base location of this role will be Park Street, London or South Yorkshire Global Data Centre, Sheffield.
