Thesis Assignment

Ericsson, as a major player in the mobile telecommunication market, has a keen interest in ensuring the security and performance of our customers' networks, and the systems we deliver and manage.
Traffic monitoring and analysis play an important role in identifying potentially harmful or malicious behavior.
Anomaly detection is one of the most useful techniques in this space, as evidenced by its success and popularity in the enterprise and IT market, mainly targeting IP networks.
Some of these anomaly detection tools can be readily applied for user-plane analysis in mobile networks as well, but similar tools and techniques are not yet (or only partially) developed for signaling traffic carried by the associated control-plane.

The goal of this thesis is to identify the most promising use cases and implement relevant techniques for Signaling Anomaly Detection in a "big data" environment based on Hadoop/YARN and Spark.
The main research question is whether or not early detection of malicious activity, such as the recent large-scale IoT botnet attacks, based only on signalling anomalies can be meaningfully achieved.
