Job description

Background

Ericsson Research is looking for Master Thesis candidates with enthusiasm and skill, to be part in our current Device Technology Research. End-user devices have a key role to fulfil in-order to meet the future ICT needs. Sensors, machines, cameras, screens, tactile interfaces, robots, wearable's – all devices with embedded computing and interface capabilities of a varying kind will be a cornerstone in the Networked Society.

Research in Distributed Robotics is a rapidly growing area spanning multiple technological fields, such as computer science, communication and control systems as well as electrical and mechanical engineering. Exciting new developments have focused on modular and self-reconfiguring robots, distributed algorithms and systems of self-organizing systems including cloud robotics. Such distributed systems can increase modularity, flexibility, and effectiveness. For that, standardized interfaces, high-speed, low latency, wide connectivity, and intelligent software solutions are required. An example of such system is modular drones which self-reconfigure to achieve a certain goal.

Assignment

The objective of the thesis is to investigate distributed robotics, for instance a set of distributed drones/quadrotors. The system is composed of several interconnected modules, where each module is embedded with sensors, actuators, as well as control and communication unit. The system is envisioned to be easy to setup and reconfigured. Online modelling and reconfiguration algorithms are expected to be developed and be implemented using cloud based technologies. The thesis will be performed at our offices in Kista, Stockholm.

The student is strongly encouraged to propose methods and innovative solutions to achieve the desired results. The developed methods are expected to be implemented in a cyber-physical test-bed currently available in our lab. We encourage a maker attitude and the applicant will belong to a group of highly skilled and talented researchers working in the areas of future device concepts, and software / hardware related research topics.

Deliverables

Deliverables expected at the end of the thesis project include clearly documented working code, a final thesis report, and a live demonstration - presentation of the final implementation and outcome to an Ericsson audience. Note that these are in addition to your university thesis requirements.

Qualifications

As a person you want to perform at your best and want to participate in deep technical discussions with other team members. You believe that disruptive innovation happens in the intersection of different technology areas.

We are looking for a self-motivated and creative student with the following qualifications:

·  Master student in the area of Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or similar
·  Fluency in English
·  Excellent analytical skills
·  Hands-on programming experience, preferably in C/C++
·  Experience of embedded systems
·  Experience in Linux
·  Ability to work independently

Bonus:

·  Experience in automatic control and robotics
·  Experience with embedded programming
·  Knowledge of machine learning
·  Experience with modelling of dynamical systems
·  Experience with cloud technologies
