Reporting to the Project Manager, the Public Works Inspector will perform routine and complex inspections of maintenance and construction projects to ensure quality control and code compliance with approved plans, specifications, standards, and maintenance contract provisions.

Key Responsibilities:

Perform routine and complex inspections of public works and civil engineering construction projects and related facilities and structures, and construction of major municipal public works facilities and Capital Improvement Projects as a 3rd party QA/QC inspector.

Inspect materials and workmanship to ensure compliance with approved plans and specifications or maintenance contract provisions.

Read and interpret plans and specifications and recommend modifications when needed.

Review and ensure completeness of construction, repair plan submittal and as-built plans.

Prepare and maintain accurate and thorough records of public works inspection work and chronologies.

Promptly respond to and resolve any conflicts.

Document and report any on-site safety violations.

Knowledge of:

Maintenance and construction principles, code compliance principles, proper construction techniques, use of materials, building, streets, and landscape, trades, traffic control and safe work practices

Methods, materials, and techniques used in public works projects, including wastewater systems, stormwater, street and traffic systems design

Wastewater line repair

Applicable state, federal and local codes and regulations

Computer equipment and software applications related to assignments such as Permits Plus, Primavera, Blue Beam, Adobe, GIMS and other similar programs

Thorough working knowledge of MS Office software suite

Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work, including the use of personal protective equipment

Construction and trench safety

Ability to:

Read and understand engineering, construction and landscape plans and specifications and assist in determining specifications and requirements for repair, maintenance, enhancement, and public works construction projects.

Enforce compliance with plans, specifications, ordinances, codes, pertinent rules, laws, jurisdictional policies and procedures related to area of assignment

Accurately record field test results as well as documenting observations and communications during inspections

Identify safety concerns when performing field inspections

Make sound field decisions and interpretations

Understand and carry out oral and written instructions; communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

Establish and maintain professional relationships with those contacted in the course of work

Effectively interface with City Officials and Project Manager

Promptly respond to complaints and/or conflicts

Experience & Education:

Two (2) years of responsible experience in the inspection of public works constructions or maintenance projects, preferably in a municipality, city or county and/or sub-professional engineering experience or maintenance and repair contracting and inspection experience, in the areas of construction, facilities and/or related field.

A minimum of High School diploma or its equivalent with specialized training in public works engineering and construction is required.

ICC Concrete Construction Inspection Certification desirable
