Subject of the internship:

The traineeship is in the frame of very high strength steels for the automotive industry. During the solidification process, specific chemistries conduct to precipitation of coarse inclusions. These inclusions are deleterious for forming properties (bending, edge formability.) which are a major issue for high strength grades.

The objective is to find an adequate mechanical test to discriminate harmfulness of inclusions. Variation of the chemistry of inclusions will be a major aspect as well as cleanliness of steel (rich or poor in inclusions).

A: First a good bibliographic study will be carried out ; Mainly on the link inclusions- mechanical results.

B: Laboratory steels will be elaborated with different amounts and chemistries of inclusions. The trainee will follow the process route New types of elaboration could be tested to increase the amount of inclusions.

C : The trainee will perform electronic microscopy analysis in order to quantify inclusions content and their chemistry.

D : Mechanical tests have to be chosen and performed on the materials to find the relevant one.

Finally, the trainee will make rupture analysis with the help of specialists to link precisely the presence of inclusions to rupture. The link between chemistry, size, density of inclusions and fracture will be performed finally.
