Job Description

Instrumentation Systems Engineer – Optical

Have you considered a career in the Space Industry working on exciting new missions to study the Earth and explore our universe? Airbus is looking for a physicist/engineer with experience in instrumentation to help design and build space optical instrumentation for the future.

The role would suit either someone with direct industrial experience or someone with academic/government institute background who is looking for a transition into space industry.

Experience in the design/analysis/assembly of scientific instrumentation is preferred, but those with understanding of optical instruments in general, from detectors to telescopes to laser systems are strongly encouraged to apply

You will be joining a small team that are creating instrumentation for future space science, Earth observation (EO) or Intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) missions.

As an Instrumentation Systems Engineer you will be responsible for proposals, typically to ESA, UK government or other Agencies, and subsequent design / definition of mission / systems for future space missions.

You will take a leading role in these proposals and studies, and work with other spacecraft engineers and space scientists in the development of new mission concepts and architectures.

This role comes with frequent UK travel

Main Responsibilities

·  Technical management of instrumentation and/or breadboard activities
·  Produce and review  technical documentation
·  Communicate with external customers, typically industrial and university teams developing new instrumentation. Including carrying out customer studies
·  Design of optical instruments, components and systems
·  System performance modelling
·  Leading and contributing to proposals
·  Leading related R&D activities and carrying out R&D studies and developments
·  Breadboard activities for future instrumentation

Skills requirement

Governmental, academic or corporate experience in the following?

·  Physics, Engineering or similar
·  Optical instrumentation
·  Understanding of the Engineering principles behind instrumentation designs
