JOB DESCRIPTION:

Our Princeton, NJ location has an opportunity for a talented and motivated Mechanical Engineer . The Mechanical Engineer will work in a fast paced, early stage operations environment to identify process and product improvements, design and develop manufacturing test systems, and create and execute design of experiments and verifications within a leading medical device company.

WHAT YOU’LL DO   

·  Design and document manufacturing processes and equipment to meet broad design goals, establish requirements and specifications.
·  Apply engineering methods (computer modeling, mechanics of materials, (GD&T) tolerance analysis, data analysis, experimental methods, etc.) to assess performance, manufacturability and reliability of components, products and processes.
·  Use fundamental failure analysis methodology (e.g. pFMEA) to derive a root cause of failure.
·  Responsible for performing analysis in the areas of statics, dynamics, mechanical stresses, shock, vibration, thermal, fit/tolerances, and manufacturability to ensure quality designs.
·  Create 3D CAD concepts of systems, select components, perform detailed design, and document for fabrication.
·  Coordinate with Purchasing, Manufacturing, and communicate with vendors to take designs from concept to production environment.
·  Use empirical, numerical and experimental analysis to analyze designs.
·  Develop and validate test methods and models.
·  Publish test protocols and reports, specifications, mechanical drawings and other types of documentation required to support design analysis and design decision making.
·  Employ best practice metrology methods appropriate to measurement application.
·  Provide engineering support for on-market products including vendor, manufacturing, component, reliability, and cost-reduction or product enhancement engineering activities.
·  Work with internal departments and external vendors to obtain prototype parts and to understand their capabilities and limitations. (for both custom and off the shelf parts).
·  Review incoming inspection data on custom parts and approve for use if appropriate.
·  Serve as technical liaison to vendors of custom and off-the-shelf components to resolve incoming quality issues.
·  Specify and perform process validation and verification plans.
·  Participate as design team member, for example in selecting design approaches, reviewing designs, and analyzing hazards.
·  Provide re-design solutions and contingency plans for engineering problems through a comprehensive review of alternatives and make recommendation on best path forward.
·  Adhere to and support the quality and regulatory requirements of Abbott, FDA and ISO, while managing projects within these requirements.
·  Support project schedules by coordinating multiple project deliverables, managing time and mechanical engineering tasks within a defined schedule.
·  May provide guidance to junior engineers and technicians.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRING   

Required

·  Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience required.
·  2+ years of Mechanical engineering experience or equivalent.
·  Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical theory and ability to apply theoretical knowledge to implement mechanical designs.
·  Demonstrated initiative, problem-solving skills and critical-thinking skills.
·  Must have experience using CAD tools (Solidworks) to design one or more of the following: sheet metal, machined, and injection molded components as well as perform trade-off analyses for manufacturability, tolerances, environmental, structural, and ergonomic factors.
·  Possess good knowledge of equipment, systems, and techniques appropriate to debugging mechanical systems.
·  Ability to work within a team and as an individual contributor in a fast paced, changing environment.
·  Ability to leverage and/or engage others to accomplish projects.
·  Ability to quickly gain knowledge, understanding or skills.
·  Strong verbal and written communications.
·  Multitasks, prioritizes and meets deadlines in a timely manner.
·  Strong organizational and follow-up skills and time management skills, as well as an attention to detail.
·  Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, PowerPoint, Word.

Preferred

·  Experience with creating functional prototypes or physical products.
·  Medical device experience.
·  Experience in product design and testing.
·  Experience with manufacturing processes such as injection molding and stamping.
·  Ability and aptitude to use various types of databases and other computer software.
·  Basic understanding of statistics.
